Collision Avoidance Training (C.A.T.) Program
Overview:

The Collision Avoidance Training (C.A.T.) program is an advanced defensive driving and vehicle control program designed for teenage drivers who already have basic driving skills. Teens should have a valid drivers license or should have had their learners permit for at least 6 months. All registrants should have logged at least 50 hours behind the wheel prior to registering.

This 2 day, 12 hour class is taught by local law enforcement, and it includes two segments-4 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind the wheel training for $140.00 per student. Classroom instruction will be held on Friday evenings and behind-the-wheel training will be held on Saturdays. Classroom and driving range locations will be in Orange County, Florida, and will vary. Please see the class schedule for more details. There will be at least one class every other month. Additional classes may be added based on demand.

Students must use their own (or parent/legal guardian's) vehicle for the behind the wheel training. Behind the wheel training is conducted on a closed course, at speeds of 35mph and below. Students may use cars, trucks, minivans and SUVs. Vehicles with modified suspension, or unsafe components will not be permitted on the driving range.

At the end of the class, students who have successfully completed all driving range skills will receive a Certificate of Completion. Certificates can be presented to most auto insurance companies for discounted insurance premiums, or proudly displayed.

Curriculum:

This program has been created by professionals in the fields of adolescent behavior, accident reconstruction engineering, substance abuse and law enforcement training. The curriculum's were created around the fact that most crashes involving teenage drivers are classified as "avoidable" and, due to lack of experience or training, teens are not prepared to make the vehicle respond appropriately.

This course is designed to give the student a better understanding of the responsibilities and liabilities of the driver, vehicle dynamics, friction and the effects of intoxicating substances on their ability to operate the vehicle. A traffic model is created at the beginning of the program and segments build on each other to a final conclusion, 35 mph is fast.

Students will work with law enforcement on the following life saving skills during the behind the wheel section of the course:

  1. Evasive maneuvers
  2. Threshold/emergency braking
  3. Forward serpentine
  4. Reverse serpentine
  5. Cornering
  6. Backing

Testimonials:

"I wanted to take a minute to thank you for the opportunity for my son to take part in the teen collision avoidance training class. The knowledge he gained should help build a more solid foundation for his driving skills. Additionally, the use of his own vehicle was invaluable as he now has a greater confidence in the handling characteristics and  his vehicle and it’s reactions in emergency maneuver situations."

" I believe the training [my daughter] received will benefit her while developing her driving skills. [My daughter] was a little nervous attending the class but enjoyed the instructors and driving lessons"
